Limpag: WordPress rides the open source juggernaut

Eight years after it was launched by a freshman in college 19 years as a blogging software, WordPress now powers 14.7 percent of the world's top one million sites.

It is used in more than 55 million websites.

In his annual statement of the word address last week, the WordPress founder Matt Mullenweg also said that the system open source content management (CMS) now operates 22 of 100 new sites created in the United States.

It is no coincidence that the first open source CMS packages today, WordPress and Drupal, also the most active developer and user communities.

Company databases, government and news websites, portals and resume jobs, ezines, classified ad systems and playmates can all still be built easily and for free on WordPress.

I studied and using open source CMS for 11 years now, starting with PHPNuke, and two of its many forks, PostNuke (now Zikula) and Xaraya. After leaving the ecosystem PHPNuke, so I tried in no particular order and varying degrees of use Pivotlog, Typo3, eZ Publish, Nucleus CMS and writings fork: CMS, Serendipity, Mambo CMS and its progeny Joomla, Textpattern, Camping (now NewScoops), Habari, Drupal and Plone.

As the headlines of the draft and minicamps fade from the news, coaches, scouts and players all tend to head in different directions this time of year for some R & final R before the last minicamps and final preparations for training camps begin in a few weeks.
