Alaskan timber wolves and the beginnings of Wolf Mountain Nature Center (WMNC), a licensed nonprofit wildlife conservation center dedicated to educating the public about the critical importance of wolves and predators in maintaining ecological balance.
WMNC first opened to the public in the summer of 2007. The following spring, three pups were born to the original pair of wolves. The pups were removed from the den when they were just 10 days old to begin the critical process of socializing them to humans. The next four and a half months were spent caring for the young wolves – named Tala, Tashina, and Dancing Turtle – around the clock. After this period of socialization, they were reintroduced to their parents in early October, and now comprise a pack.
Wild animals are not pets. They remain inherently wild, even when they live in captivity under human care, but as Pryor explains, they must be socialized to accept human interaction so they can be successfully managed and monitored. One example would be the need for close contact if a wolf requires veterinary attention – a thorn in a paw, medications, etc. Proper socialization makes this kind of contact possible.
For the most part, however, the wolves are simply allowed to be wolves and engage in behaviors that you would see in the wild if it were possible to observe them on a daily basis.
The wolves are fed a varied diet as close to what they would eat in the wild as possible: fish donated by Morrisville State College, as well as legally-procured deer that have been killed by drivers, raw chicken, hearts, and liver, and the occasional high-quality kibble. Feeding times are random, and food is often hidden so the wolves can “find” it on their own. If a rabbit or a squirrel happens to get inside the enclosure, they might become food as well, but the wolves are never intentionally fed live prey.
