Betty Boop moves into the Bay City's Antique Toy and Firetruck Museum
BAY CITY — Move over Barbie, there's a new gal in town and she's stirring up quite a fuss.The animated 1930s cartoon character and pin-up girl Betty Boop has found a home among the 12,000 toys and real fire trucks that make up the 25,000-square-foot Bay City’s Antique Toy & Firehouse Museum — and she's been drawing a crowd since word got out last weekend.
Jimmie Dobson, museum owner, said he didn't realize Betty Boop would be one of the biggest draws the museum has ever had.
“The first Sunday it was open we had a multitude of Mount Pleasant and Alma people,” Dobson said. “It was the Betty Boop Fan Club. One woman showed me a tattoo she had of Betty. I have a stack of information people have sent me.”
The 50 pieces are the collection of Dirk B. Waltz, a Midland philanthropist, who enjoyed collecting anything that had to do with the cartoon character created by Max Fleischer. Waltz died earlier this year at the age of 97.
Donated to the museum June 15 by Waltz's family trust, Betty Boop now makes her home next to various Barbies and NASCAR items in a section called “Big and Little Boys Collectible Toys.”
A 5-foot doll, featuring Betty as a waitress holding up a large chalkboard menu, welcomes visitors to Betty's new place.
Once fans enter the section, they will find Betty Boop dolls, bobbleheads, license plates, mugs, sugar canisters, glasses, lamps, a lava light and a street sign noting that this is Betty Boop Avenue. Items are displayed in a glass case.
There is also an original drawing of Betty Boop in various poses by Myron Waldman, an animator who worked on the character at Fleischer Studios.
A couple of the more notable pieces are dolls. One is Betty at the beach with a movie magazine tucked under her arm, and Betty on a shopping trip, complete with packages and a bag that says “Boopies” instead of “Bloomies.”
Viewing the exhibit for the first time this week, son Dirk D. Waltz and wife Marti Cederberg couldn't be happier with the way the collection — that once graced the Waltz's Linwood cottage — is displayed at the museum.
