Here are some tips to being thifty

Get in touch with your inner stylist — Before anyone in your family other drops another $20 on a haircut, grab a decent razor for the same price and do the job yourself. Your stuff: unplugged — Some gadgets will continue to use power even after you’ve flipped off the power switch. Unplug the coffeemaker, phone charger and other appliances you’re not using. Make your own cleaning products — Merissa Alink calls this “Frugality 101.” She suggests an all-purpose cleaner made with one part vinegar, two parts water and a few drops of tea tree or lavender essential oil. Or try a glass or window cleaner made with one part vinegar and two parts water.  Make your own baby food — All those jars of green beans can be real budget-busters. Puree fruits and veggies in a blender or food processer. Pour puree into ice cube trays and freeze. Remove two or three cubes to thaw, mix in some cereal to form a thicker consistency and prepare to wow your little one’s taste buds. If it’s glass, don’t throw it — Pyrex and other glass containers can be pricey, so hold on to those jars that previously held pickles, jam and other foods. Use them to store leftovers. Reuse some of the prettier ones to hold homemade goodies to give as housewarming or Christmas gifts. Cover the lids with a pretty piece of fabric and ribbon. No more paper napkins — Switch to cloth napkins, and you’ll save money and score points with Emily Post. Watch for post- holiday sales and clearance holiday-themed fabric from which to sew napkins. Throw in the towel(s) — It doesn’t take long to use up a roll of paper towels. Cut up old clothes or sheets to use instead. Stash your rags under the sink so you’re not tempted to reach for paper. Newspaper also works. Dry clothes on the clothesline — Nothing beats the smell of freshly lined-dry clothing and sheets. When weather doesn’t permit, invest in a wooden dry rack and dry your clothes inside.

Natural Flea Repellants And Flea Control Methods | Self ...

Many people do not want to use chemical sprays, insecticides and other materials that could be hazardous around their pets or in their homes, especially if they have children. But if you have fleas then you definitely need to do something to get rid of them. There are natural products and materials that you can use to get rid of fleas from your pets and your home and to protect your pets from being infested with fleas again. Here’s a brief overview of some of the natural ways to control fleas:

Many pet stores and some vets carry organic or all-natural flea shampoos that contain essential oils and other herbal elements mixed into a safe, non toxic base soap that you can use to wash your pet, your pet’s bedding, your floors and carpets, or any other items that you need to wash to get rid of fleas. Organic flea shampoos are usually mild but you should check to see what essential oils are used in the shampoo before using it on your pet because some essential oils can be harmful to some kinds of pets.

You can make your herbal pet flea repellant shampoos at home by using essential oils or herbs mixed with a gentle soap, like a baby shampoo or tea tree oil shampoo. It’s easy to find fresh herbs at the health food store or local farmer’s market and you can customize the shampoo for your pet. If you want to use a soap that’s all organic you can buy organic shampoo base at crafting supply stores or at online bath and beauty supply stores in bulk that is usually very inexpensive.

Herbal flea powders are available in specialty stores or you can make your own using a recipe of powdered herbs. Dr. Pitcairn’s Herbal Flea Powder recipe is very popular with cat owners. Herbal flea powders can be applied directly to your pet’s skin and combed or brushed through the coat to repel fleas but it won’t actually kill the fleas. So if your pet is an outdoor pet you probably should apply the herbal flea powder outdoors so that the fleas can jump off the pet and not take up residence in the house.
