New York Yacht Club's Race Week at Newport | YachtPals.com
Newport, Rhode Island - Race Week at Newport got off to a great start yesterday, when some world famous classic yachts and their sailing crews gathered in Rhode Island for the New York Yacht Club's 100th birthday celebration of legendary yacht designer Olin Stephens, sponsored by Rolex. Stephens, of the famous Sparkman & Stephens, designed some of the world's most beautiful and well regarded boats, and many of them can be seen sailing out on Narragansett Bay in the Classics Regatta this weekend.
The yacht Dorade, one of the very first boats designed by Stephens (when he was 21 years old), is just one of the spectacular boats sailing at this classics regatta. "Every classic yacht has a unique story behind it, it seems," said Joe Dockery of Newport, "and Olin, of course, has a story for every one of his designs." According to Dockery, when his yacht Dorade was launched in 1931, it sparked a revolution in sailboat design. Another boat with a tale to tell is the legendary 1935 cutter Sonny. Rammed by a German submarine in WWII, Sonny was brought back from the depths of the sea to be sailed again.
Thirteen 12 Meter boats from 1958 to 1987, each known for its role in America's Cup history, raced yesterday on Narragansett Bay. In the "Modern" Division, two of the most famous yachts were Courageous, skippered by Stephen Glascock of Rhode Island, and Intrepid, skippered by Jack Curtin of New York. These classic America's Cup thoroughbreds (Intrepid 1967/1970 and Courageous 1974/1977), have had a "great rivalry for the better part of ten years," according to Curtin of Intrepid. "Courageous definitely is the boat to beat," he said. "If we didn't have the team we have, we'd be in trouble."
With four America's Cup sailors aboard, the yacht Intrepid led the whole course in race one on Friday. In race two, however, the experienced crew of Courageous showed intrepid their stern on a run, leaving the boats tied after two races. Third to finish in both races was another successful defender of the America's Cup (1980), Ernest Jacquet's yacht Freedom.
