Most area banks get high marks from Bauer

Four banks with a deposit base in the Fredericksburg area received Bauer Financial's top rating for the quarter ending June 30, while one was rated as "problematic."

Virginia Partners Bank, Cardinal Bank, StellarOne Bank and First Citizens Bank & Trust all received Bauer's five-star "superior" rating.

About 41 percent of U.S. banks got Bauer's top rating for the quarter ending June 30. That was the highest percentage since the quarter ending Sept. 30, 2007, the Florida-based firm announced Monday.

Louisa-based Virginia Community Bank received the lowest rating of all banks with a deposit base in the Fredericksburg region. Bauer gave the bank two stars, which is classified as "problematic."

About 12 percent of U.S. banks were listed as either "problematic" or worse, according to Bauer's latest ratings, which are based on financial criteria including capital ratio, profitability, delinquent loans, regulatory agreements, liquidity and more.

Virginia Partners and StellarOne each received four stars in Bauer's previous quarterly ratings, which were based on data as of March 31. Those were the only area banks whose ratings changed in the ensuing three months.

Here is how other banks with a deposit base in the Fredericksburg area fared in the latest Bauer ratings:

Four stars ("Excellent"): Carter Bank & Trust, Fauquier Bank, Capital One Bank, Woodforest National Bank, Peoples Community Bank, BB&T.

Three and a half stars ("Good"): Virginia Commerce Bank, Union First Market Bank, M&T Bank, PNC Bank.

Three stars ("Adequate"): EVB, SunTrust Bank, Bank of America, Wells Fargo Bank, Essex Bank.

5.9 Earthquake in Virginia felt In Atlanta, Georgia

The large scale earthquake of 5.9 on the Richter Scale, and that struck officially “Tuesday, August 23, 2011 at 01:51:04 PM,” according to the US Geological Survey, officially hit the following cities: Charlottesville, Virginia, Fredericksburg, Virginia, Richmond, Virginia, and Farmville, Virginia.

But unofficially it was felt in New York, Boston, and Atlanta. Yep. And while this blogger didn’t feel it, a family friend who works in Alpharetta, Georgia, about 40 miles north of us, sent this text: “Did y’all feel that trembling? My bldg in Alpharetta shook, result of earthquake in Virginia. I’m 35 miles north of downtown, felt it here. Entire building swayed. Rather nauseating…”

As I blog this, I’m 20 minutes south of Atlanta International Airport, visiting my Mom. There’s no report of feeling “the shakes” from anyone around us, including my god mother.

But CNN, headquartered in Atlanta, is reporting many accounts of people in the city feeling the ground briefly shake. Obviously topography is at play in explaining these different reports, but the bottom line is, the Virginia Earthquake reached as far as Atlanta.

And don’t forget, what’s called the “largest earthquake in Colorado since 1967″ hit yesterday, and aftershocks are still happening.

Something’s going on.
