Master gardeners can help your yard flourish

Courses are given once a year and the times vary for each county. Applications are accepted year-round and as the time for the class approaches, program directors contact applicants to determine their level of interest and ability to devote the required time to classes, volunteer hours and continuing education.

Program directors then conduct interviews and make their selections. What master gardener program directors are looking for when they interview potential participants are enthusiasm for gardening and plants and learning more about them, commitment to attending every weekly class and fulfilling the volunteer requirements and, most of all, a desire to share their knowledge with home gardeners and the community.

Courses usually take the better part of a day each week for 12 to 15 weeks. They vary according to each county's growing conditions and the needs of its home gardeners. They are intensive and demanding and attendance is mandatory. But mentors and diverse teaching and learning methods practically guarantee success for serious students. There are also demonstrations, guest speakers, potlucks and field trips. And while they are not on the class schedule, there is camaraderie and often the beginning of lifelong friendships.

You could look up the answers and hope that your resource is up to date and will address your question with regard to the conditions in your landscape. Or . . . you could pick up the phone and benefit from the undivided attention of a real person with experience, expertise and access to the latest research. And, if by chance the volunteer master gardener who picks up the phone doesn't know the answer, he or she will find out and call you back. And it costs you nothing.

A number of reasons a computer freezes up range from a malicious virus invading the system to the computer being over loaded with programs and windows running all at once.

If you open up multiple browsers and run numerous programs all at once, they will require an awful lot of memory for the computer to process these functions. If you do not have enough memory to run all these things, it can cause the computer to lock up, and other times cause it to run slow.

For users who will be operating their computers while running several programs all at once, you will need at least 2 gigabytes of memory. One gig is fine for one or two programs at the same time.

Websites that are heavy on graphics can also cause a computer to freeze, even with 1GB of memory installed on the system.

Websites and emails today are loaded with graphics, and require lots of memory to be in the computer to make it work smoothly and without stutters. The more memory the computer has at its disposal will make it run better. Programs like word processing don’t require that much memory.

On the other hand, those who watch movies frequently will need to make sure that they have plenty of memory on board, otherwise the computer will not playback the video that well.

More often than not, the thing that make a computer freeze up are associated with not having enough memory to process the programs. However, sometimes it can also be slow due to a slow website that you are visiting.

Not every website is up to speed and has the latest featured. When you get one that hasn’t been updated for quite some time, your computer can freeze. An other contributing factor to this type of issue is that if the website gets overloaded with visitors, it can freeze also because it can’t handle the amount of visitors at once.
