Bermagui fishing report: Aug. 24
AUGUST is last of the winter months, but at least the days are a little longer.The water has warmed a little too, bringing with it the opportunity to pursue some more active bream and flathead in the estuaries.
Most creeks and rivers in the area have received another solid flush out on the back of last week’s rains, which pushed a lot of fish and bait downstream closer to the entrance of such estuaries as they avoid the fresh water.
Those concentrating their efforts no more than 1km from the mouth on a run out tide in the Bermagui River, Wapengo and Wallaga Lake are landing good numbers of flathead.
The clear front of water pushing in when the tide is running up is the place to pursue bream, trevally, tailor and the odd salmon.
A variety of hard and soft lures will work here, with good all-round options being a grub or wriggler style soft plastic like the Squidgy Wriggler or Gulp 2 and 3-inch minnow grubs.
Forgotten heroes like the Atomic Grubs and Mini Mini’s K and A grubs still work of course, they’re just not as trendy at present.
It’s a less expensive option also when your soft lure is not on the bottom but in the bite zone of a feeding Tailor. Closed estuaries are fishing well along rock ledges, snags and weed beds.
Sight fishing with hard bodies can be highly rewarding but it’s a bit hard at the moment with some very dirty water around but blind casting across most structure can and will produce bream of all sizes.
Some favoured lures include the Tiemco Stick Minnows, Zipbaits Khamasin Jnr and Ecogear SX40s to name a few.
Kingfish moving in for good?
Our inshore waters continue to produce kingfish with the bite heating up again the past two days.
The fish remain in big numbers off the tower (30m to 45m deep) and across a wide stretch off Cuttagee in 40-55m of water. It appears these fish are content to be there, so perhaps it’s their new place of residence.
