Foundation awards school grants
A total of $89,900 in requests approved
The Cliff Williams Memorial Foundation (CWMF) has provided educators in LaSalle Parish with more than $951,037 in grants since it was formed in 1990.
For the current school year, a total of $89,900 in grants were approved by the Foundation for various teachers in the LaSalle Parish School System, with $79,619 coming from CWMF and the remaining $10,281 coming from various school board funding sources.
The Foundation was formed when Justiss Oil Company honored the memory of Cliff Williams with an endowment gift to be used for the educational needs of children in LaSalle Parish.
Cliff, the son of Pat and Charles Williams of Jena, was married to Jennifer Justiss Williams Loe, and is the father of Amy Williams Kunkel and Adam Williams.
Cliff was a petroleum engineer and Justiss Oil Company's Vice-President of Drilling and Production Operation for seven years prior to his untimely death more than 21 years ago.
He was actively involved in many industry organizations, and upon his early death, was posthumously awarded the "Contractor of the Year" award by Reed Tool Company and the International Association of Drilling Contractors.
The Foundation is indeed a living memory to Cliff. Funds generated from the endowment and other foundation income helps support education by providing grants for achievement award programs, educational trips, classroom hands-on teaching aids, maps, microscopes, computers, software, calculators, classroom TVs and VCRs, presenters, projectors, digital cameras, etc., each year.
The Foundation is operated by a board of directors, chaired since its inception by Jennifer Williams Loe. Members of the board include Sidney Amyx, Sammy Franklin, Dr. Robert Kendrick, Shelby Loe, W. B. "Bo" McCartney, Jr., Judge Jimmie Peters, Paul Tweedy, Adam Williams and Joe Wilson.
The board recently decided on grant awards for the 2011-12 school term totaling $79,619, with an additional $10,281 coming from various school board funding sources, with teachers from every school in the parish receiving some type grant.
