Sackville Triathlon sees local athletes shine

Tomorrow, many of them will compete in the Sackville Triathlon, which starts at 10 a.m. in Sackville.

"The Sprint Tri consists of a 750-metre swim in Silver Lake at Lillas Fawcett Park and is then followed by a three-kilometre run, a 20-kilometre bike ride and a five-kilometre run," says Dr. Ross Thomas, race director and one of the organizers of the event.

"The course is flat and windy on secondary roads and rail trail. This is considered a fast and, apart from the sometimes blustery marsh wind, an easy route. It is geared for first timers but also attracts some elite athletes."

Ross, along with Peter Manchester, John Peters and Ian Dennis are the main organizers. Ross, John and Peter have been organizing races for the past 11 years. The race organizers set the course and Tri N.B. approves it.

"We expect 125 to 150 participants and there are prizes for first and second place overall and in each age category, which includes separate male and female categories from 15 to 19, 20 to 29, etc."

The Sackville Sprint Triathlon was started by Martin McEwan, a Mount Allison University student and swim club member, 13 years ago.

"We depend heavily on the generous and experienced support of approximately 30 volunteers," says Ross, "most of whom are also members of the Tantramar Outdoor Club, which is the major sponsor of the event. Other sponsors include the Town of Sackville, AIL Industries Ltd., Birchwood Holdings and Bowser Construction."

Mike Freeman, a professional engineer working and living in Moncton, has been competing in triathlons since 2005.

"The Sackville Sprint Triathlon was my first-ever sanctioned event. My goal for the 2011 Sackville Triathlon is to finish in the top 10 per cent; there are the perennial favourites to win and I am certainly not one of those guys.

"Our club also has an end-of-the-year celebration after the Sackville race so that always adds to the fun of the day."

Mike is social director for the Southeast Storm Triathlon Club, which has 85 local triathletes/duathletes training and competing for their personal goals and fitness objectives.
