Denis Peirce: As water flows drop, fishing starts to pick up
Bob Grace of the Ted Fay Fly Shop says this transition period beginning with the water too high for access. At this stage, the fish have not seen the flies, and they are "stupid." During the transition that the fall of water levels and fishermen hit the water, the fish get an education. But there are stupid trout to be found. Johnston Jim (www.SierraStreamSideCabins.com) was fishing near his school five miles above Downieville. Jim said the fishing has improved over the last two weeks, and now it's time to experience the fly fishing of the season as the water drops into shape. Jim has been fishing with Stimulators, Buzz Hackles, Yellow Sallies and Copper Johns. The North Feather above Oroville along Highway 70 has been fishing well when you can find flows below 400 cfs. There are numerous power plants and dams regulating the flows on various reaches. Recently, the flows have been fluctuating between 340 and 600 cfs. If you are traveling this highway and the river looks too good to pass up, it just may be. Last week, Rick Aeschliman hiked into the Grouse Ridge area. He went from Carr Lake to Milk Lake. Each lake that he stopped to fish along the way produced trout for him. There were still snow drifts across the trail in places. He saw trout feeding near shore on all the lakes. He used spinning gear and spoons. It is prime time on the Grouse Ridge Lakes also. Coho fishing on Lake Oroville is very good for those anglers in the know. Craig Bentley, Huntington's Sports, says the successful setup has been an eight-inch “Hot Spot” dodger (white with silver tape) followed by a pond smelt imitation. The best depths have been 55 to 85 feet down, close to structure. Another good terrain feature to find is large flats in the same depth range.How Low Can Lake Oroville - Bookshelf
