Sun never sets on her smile
You don't stumble upon Sunset Grill in Ruskin.
It's as west as you can go before hitting the water, tucked away in the Little Harbor resort with condos, boat docks and a private beach.
But if you do, Jamie Johnson tries her best to keep you coming back.
Most of the time, she succeeds. She considers her customers like family.
They feel the same. They voted her tbt* 's Ultimate Bartender for 2011 out of more than 650 nominations. She won $500, her photo on the cover of tbt* 's 2011 Ultimate Bar Guide and endless rounds of congratulations.
Angela Talbott gave her a vase of flowers. She and friend Tine ValPolen come to the tiki bar almost every Wednesday at 11 a.m. "You never catch her in a bad mood,'' ValPolen said. "She's always happy and bubbly and has an open ear.''
People know Johnson throughout the South Shore. When Talbott was buying the flowers at the Apollo Beach Publix, the florist said she loved Johnson and gave Talbott a deep discount.
"No wonder she won,'' Talbott said.
Johnson, 26, started working at the resort formerly called Bahia Beach nine years ago. She began as a busgirl then quickly graduated to waitress and bartender.
She practically lives behind the bar, working 12-hour shifts several days a week, including every Wacky Wednesday, when bottles of Bud and Bud Light are $1.50. Regulars always inquire about her schedule.
"I try to make relationships with all my guests,'' she said. "I feel like if I was there at the bar, how would I want to be treated?''
On particularly hot days, that means pulling out the squirt guns for a water war at the bar. Or having a customer's favorite beer waiting for them on ice.
A graduate of East Bay High School, Johnson learned to make drinks on the job. Her speciality? A Jamie Vegas shot with vodka, watermelon pucker and Red Bull.
