Bernanke sends a wake-up call to Congress

While Mr. Bernanke did not commit to new measures, it is clear that he will remain sensitive to further deterioration in the economic outlook in the context of an already fragile recovery. The Fed is still very much prepared to employ more measures to prop up the economy but unlike last year, Mr. Bernanke seems frustrated by politicians. He is calling for Congress to complement his actions instead of rendering them less effective.

It was a bold statement from the Fed Reserve Chairman to say that financial markets and the economy were disrupted by Congress. A situation that if repeated could seriously jeopardize the willingness of international investors to hold U.S. financial assets according to the Fed Chairman.

Bernanke sends a message. The Fed will do all it can but it seems that the preference would be to do so in conjunction with a fiscal plan that would be supportive rather than disruptive. Unfortunately, Mr. Bernanke may not have the luxury to wait for politicians with households already hit by a negative wealth effect that could be amplified should the S&P 500 fall into bear market territory.
