Hinsdale Middle School students use red tulips to remember ...

Last October the Hinsdale Middle School Peer Leadership Club brainstormed ideas to recognize Red Ribbon Week—one of the nation’s oldest drug-prevention programs, supported by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. Young people wear red ribbons and participate in events as they pledge to remain drug- and alcohol-free. At HMS, the Peer Leadership group decided it would be a great idea to plant tulip bulbs during Red Ribbon Week—knowing that when the red tulips bloomed in the spring, they would serve as a reminder to the students about their fall Red Ribbon Week pledges. Supported by a KIDS grant from the District 181 Foundation, the peer leaders, their sponsor teachers, PTO parents and HMS administrators worked together to plant the bulbs last fall. The tulips now are in bloom near the bus loop at HMS, on Third Street between Garfield Ave. and Washington St. Pictured here are the HMS students who planted the bulbs—working last fall and enjoying the tulips this week—along with Principal Ruben Peña and Assistant Principal Martha Henrikson, and Peer Leadership sponsors Kelly Ditmars and Jeff Sledz.
