Fort Mill, Tega Cay leaders optimistic about area growth

Optimism in the face of an economic downturn was the theme of Tuesday's State of the Community Breakfast at St. John's United Methodist Church in Fort Mill.

Tega Cay Mayor George Sheppard, Fort Mill Mayor Danny Funderburk and Fort Mill schools superintendent Chuck Epps summarized the challenges and successes of the past year.

Balancing growth without straying too far from the city's laid-back, recreation-oriented identity was Tega Cay's challenge, Sheppard said. That forced officials to choose between "needs and wants."

Sheppard detailed the growth of the Lake Ridge subdivision, which added 70 new homes in the past year. Construction has begun on the remaining Lakeshore townhomes that would complete the subdivision, which launched in 2000.

Another bright spot Tega Cay reported was a $14,000 profit from its golf course facilities, Sheppard said - a first for the city, which had been subsidizing its operations.

The Tega Cay Fire Department will add two full-time positions and one part-time position, Sheppard said. The new employees will allow the station to provide 24-hour service to residents.

The quality and availability of "basic services" formed the focus of Funderburk's address. He detailed the town's continued - albeit slower - growth in the face of the recession.

Funderburk described future plans for "a large chain restaurant" and hotel in the town. In 2009, plans were set for a hotel off S.C. 160 near Lowe's, but the developer pulled out of the project.

Also on tap for Fort Mill are plans for a new water plant on the Catawba River, an expansion of the waste treatment facility and the continued development of the "Downtown Fort Mill Revitalization Plan."

Funderburk closed by lauding the creation of a Fort Mill Economic Council, designed to attract new businesses and growth opportunities, and announced the ribbon-cutting for the town's new Veteran's Memorial Park is Aug. 20.
