Will Intel's ultrabook replace the netbook?
Earlier this year, Intel unveiled its plan to standardize, popularize and extend the ultra-mobile form factor. Dubbed “ultrabooks,” the new systems codify a group of design concepts that OEMs have experimented with for years. Dell’s Adamo and Apple’s MacBook Air are both ultrabook-class systems, even if they don’t literally conform to Intel’s standard definition.
Ultrabooks are Intel’s two-pronged attempt to simultaneously promote and sexify the traditional x86 notebook in the face of devices like the iPad, while preventing the further commoditization of its own products. While linked, the two prongs are distinct enough to deserve individual examination.
Intel’s Atom(ic) dilemmaIntel saw the long-term potential of handheld computing at least as far back as 2006 (the first-generation MID platform, McCaslin, debuted in 2007). The company has made it clear from the very beginning that Atom was intended to power an entirely new segment of products, though Intel initially focused on what it called Mobile Internet Devices as opposed to tablets.
Tablets are dangerous because they’re the first mainstream mobile platform in decades that isn’t running on Intel hardware.
Ultrabooks are Intel’s attempt to capture the features that make tablets attractive while offering notebook-class options that keep dollars flowing towards x86-based computing devices. They aren’t intended to compete directly with tablets — don’t expect to see $500 ultrabooks — but there’s bound to be an emphasis on “Tablet Plus” rhetoric, with ultrabooks positioned as offering all the convenience and portability of a tablet plus the power and flexibility of a notebook “for just a few dollars more.”
The commoditization quarrelUltrabooks are meant to fight the long-term problem of CPU commoditization by wrapping Intel’s hardware in a sexy form factor that commands higher prices. OEMs, however, seem less than thrilled with Intel’s new strategy. The CPU manufacturer is seen as protecting its own enormous margins while scolding OEMs operating in the 10-15 percent margin range over high prices .
