Hurricane Irene: State is in storm's sights; town officials get ready

Having weathered an earthquake, Wilton is looking at the next potential disaster Mother Nature may dish out this weekend: Hurricane Irene.

Wilton Fire Chief Paul Milositz, who is also the town’s emergency director, said officials are “closely monitoring” the Category 3 hurricane, and he expected the town’s emergency services organizations would meet today to discuss preparations. Both the police and fire departments will have additional personnel on duty, he said. The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is also on stand-by.

Meteorologists and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) officials have been monitoring the storm since it was just a tropical wave last week.

Hurricane Irene is moving north toward the North Carolina coast, and could become a Category 4 storm — with winds of more than 130 mph — before making contact with the U.S. coastline. Forecasters say its projected path could bring the hurricane to the Northeast, including Connecticut, by late this weekend. It has been causing devastation to the Bahamas overnight.

Along the North Carolina coast, about 150,000 tourists are being urged to leave low-lying beach areas. Forced evacuation orders may be issued soon.

No specific hurricane watches or warnings have been issues yet for Connecticut by the National Weather Service.

The new Connecticut Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection was to meet with FEMA officials and form plans for a disaster response. Chief Milositz has been in touch with CL&P and a representative will be at the town emergency operations center in the police station if needed.

“I would take this hurricane seriously,” Chief Milositz said. “It could be potentially a very bad storm for us with high winds and localized flooding.” He urged citizens to make their own emergency plans. “There’s an emergency guide on the town Web site ( wiltonct.org ), download it and take a look at it. You should plan on being self-sufficient for three days.
