Zambian elections: Poverty, prosperity and potholes
It is hard to imagine that Kafue was a booming town with a large nitrogen plant, a busy train station and a thriving textiles industry 20 years ago. Perched on the north bank of the Kafue River, the transit town was the crossing point for the railway from Lusaka-to-Livingstone on the Zimbabwean border, and home to the famous 427-metre steel Kafue railway bridge, which was erected by Mashonaland Railways in 1906. Six decades later, when the government of Kenneth Kaunda and the newly independent Zambia wanted to reduce the pressure on increasingly congested Lusaka, Kafue was reborn as an industrial, residential and employment hub. Experts from as far afield as Yugoslavia, Italy, Israel and Japan were reportedly called in to help construct a utopian mix of factories, homes and community facilities. Competition from low-cost imports as well as hard-headed private business decisions that focused on profitability and not staff numbers, as parastatals tend to do, resulted in most of the factories and production lines grinding to a halt. The town's government-run fertiliser plant, which at its height employed more than 2 500 people, stuttered along at less than 20% of its capacity. Chinese investment has revived production at a mothballed nickel factory in Mazabuka, a town about 40km west, although work there is suspended at the moment because of land subsidence in the mine. A new India-funded steel-scrap plant in the town has also created some jobs and there is major investment, again from China, in a nearby hydropower plant. It is just after 11am when we arrive, slightly sweaty from a bumpy hour and a half in a cramped minibus taxi. The town's bars are already busy. Older men sit in dark corners nursing their drinks while teenagers congregate around pool tables standing in the open. They stop between shots to tell us there is no work in the town and nothing else to do but drink. Kaka and Chibesa are among the 1.Out Of Africa Wildlife Park - News

One of our fun adventures while our family was visiting was going to the Out of Africa Wildlife Park . It’s a privately owned and operated wildlife area that offers safari tours, animal exhibits, and wildlife shows. As you can probably tell by the name, most of the animals are native to Africa, so our natural desert environment suits them nicely. We were pleased to learn that they offer military discounts for general admission. In addition to the safari, they have premium shows, but we decided not to do those – well, except for the tiger feeding.
As part of the safari, each guest is given a carrot to feed to either a giraffe or a camel. The girls thought it was fun feeding the animals. Munchkin got to feed both the giraffes and the camel thanks to Mommy and Daddy giving up their carrots.
This pour giraffe had an injury to his eye, so we had to be very careful around his face. He still loves being around people, but he was a bit more skittish than normal. One of the giraffes kept trying to lick my Dad; it was so funny. They have such long tongues which are fascinating to watch while they reach out for food or to give someone a big, sloppy kiss.
If you think the zebra looks like he’s posing, you’d be right. This guy loves to smile for the camera. While I was only able to get a partial smile in this picture, my sister got an excellent picture of this guy in all of his cheesy grin goodness. It was hilarious!
It was warm out that day – not nearly as hot as we’re use to here – but it was warm enough. This guy had the right idea – relaxing in the shade. Afternoon siesta anyone?
One of the fun shows at the park is the tiger show. What makes this unique from many other wildlife shows at different parks is that they do not script/choreograph the show. They just get out there and play with the two tigers in the show. This makes for an organic, fun, somewhat crazy, entertaining show. They never know what the tigers may or may not decide to do for that particular show. The tigers definitely had minds of their own.
