Scouts to host Pinewood Derby

Arrowhead District Cub Scout troops are using blocks of wood and sets of wheels to construct race cars that they will use to compete in a 55-year-old contest, set for this weekend in Owings Mills.

Ten boys from Cub Scout packs 235, 18, and 634 are gearing up for competition at the district's first Pinewood Derby.

Since 1953, the Boy Scouts of America's Cub Scouts have been racing the small wooden cars in the Pinewood Derby, a downhill race where the only energy used to propel the cars forward is the force of gravity.

In order to successfully complete a wood badge course, assistant scoutmaster Steve Halpern decided to organize the race as a way to satisfy one of the course's requirements.

"I've seen them in other districts," he said.

Halpern has been assistant scoutmaster since 2000 and enrolled in the course to brush up on leadership skills and keep up-to-date with policies.

Now, two months later, preparations for the race are well underway.

The rules of the Pinewood Derby specify the required length and width of the cars, prohibit using oil, springs, and starting devices, and limit the materials that participants can use to the materials that are provided in the Pinewood Derby kit.

Two different troops donated the race track and supplies for the boys to use in the race.

"It's one big family," Halpern said.

Halpern set up the competition so that each of the 10 boys gets to race their cars four times and the scout with the best cumulative time will be the winner.

Although adults will be helping to build the cars, Boy Scouts will run the event.

"We're showing the Cub Scouts what it's like to be a boy scout," Halpern said.

Cub Scouts are ages 6-11 and boy scouts are 11-18.

The different Cub Scout packs meet once every week for games, crafts, other activities, and trips.

There are already plans for next spring for each district to have their own Pinewood Derby race, and ultimately, a larger championship race.
