Halloween 'pop-up' stores scare off profits

While many people think late August is too early to start thinking about Halloween, it’s none too soon for retailers who want to cash in on a holiday that nets more than $5 billion nationally, according to the National Retail Federation.

That means costume and party stores are stocking up with Halloween merchandise, and numerous temporary Halloween stores are poised to “pop up” in empty strip mall retail space around Jacksonville.

The temporary stores give shoppers an explosion of Halloween merchandise, job-seekers a few months’ work and building owners a few months’ rent from otherwise unoccupied space, but at least one owner of full-time party supply and costume stores says the “pop-ups” have a petrifying effect on his Halloween sales.

Last year, there were about a half-dozen temporary Halloween stores in the Jacksonville area, several owned by Spirit Halloween, a subsidiary of mall retailer Spencer Gifts, while others were run by Halloween City and Halloween Express.

The former Circuit City store near Southside and Atlantic boulevards near the Regency Square mall will again be the home of a Spirit Halloween this year. Spirit Halloween District Manager Joann  Oliver said the Regency store is set to open Sept. 1. More could be added as the season progresses, she said.

Amal Soni  is president of Jacksonville-based The Party Shop, a full-time party store at 13500 Beach Boulevard, but he also will have two pop-up stores this year: one at River City marketplace near the Jacksonville International Airport on the Northside and one on Southside Boulevard near The Avenues mall. Those will open in late September, he said.

In a former Barnes & Noble store across Atlantic Boulevard from the Spirit Halloween location, Daytona Beach-based Halloween Megastore is setting up a store, Soni said. Halloween Express is planning to open a store this year at 1210 Beach Blvd., and Soni noted that Halloween City is likely to have stores at Fleming Island and in Argyle. Spirit Halloween will likely open at least one more store, in Orange Park near Blanding Boulevard and Wells Road.
