Opposition Leader Isobel Redmond issued the "perform or else" edict at the Liberal Party annual meeting at the Adelaide Convention Centre yesterday in which she outlined plans for a strong marginal seats campaign focused on key seats such as Bright, Hartley, Colton and Ashford.
Factors taken into account to see if candidates are working hard enough will be:
HOW often they doorknock.
HOW often they attend community meetings.
HOW and when they stay in touch with the electorate.
Ms Redmond took the opportunity to launch a scathing attack on incoming premier Jay Weatherill, but did not announce any new policies.
She said she would make a series of bimonthly speeches outlining the Liberal vision but concrete policy statements appear unlikely before next year. The AGM saw former senator Grant Chapman re-elected unopposed as state president.
He said a top priority for an incoming Liberal government would be to refer the MacPherson inquiry into alleged corruption at Burnside Council to a new Independent Commission Against Corruption, a plan confirmed by Ms Redmond.
The AGM drew a range of Liberal supporters including most sitting MPs and past warhorses ranging from John Olsen and Dean Brown to Alexander Downer and Nick Minchin. Ms Redmond drew a predictable standing ovation with her speech which squarely took aim at Mr Weatherill.
"Jay Weatherill has already proven to be a weak, insipid and indecisive leader who is prepared to put the battle of two men's egos ahead of the best interests of hard-working South Australians," she told supporters.
"Jay will spruik a new Labor mantra - an inclusive leadership that is listening to the needs of the electorate - but remember, he sat in every Cabinet meeting and supported every unpopular measure this Government has implemented.
"Make no mistake, what we are seeing here is a slow and very deliberate humiliation of the premier-in-waiting, and Jay has shown himself too weak to stand up to them.
