Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra set for latest European tour
-->After an intensive week of artistic preparation, music director Manfred Honeck and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra depart Tuesday on a three-week European Festivals Tour. It will be the orchestra's the fourth international tour with Honeck and its 36th since 1948.
The musicians will play a dozen concerts in nine cities in six countries, performing with celebrated violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter and pianist Helene Grimaud. Featured symphonic works include the Symphony No. 5 of Gustav Mahler and of Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky.
"This great orchestra has to be part of the international scene to show its fantastic quality and brilliance," says Honeck.
The symphony played to packed houses on its previous European tour in May 2010. The conductor says he's heard audiences are eager to experience it again.
Representatives of the Pittsburgh Regional Alliance will travel with the symphony for the sixth consecutive foreign tour to promote economic development.
The orchestra returned from vacation last Tuesday for rehearsals at Pittsburgh Opera's headquarters in the Strip District and for invitation-only concerts on Friday and Saturday evenings. (Heinz Hall is closed this summer for $2 million in renovations, and will reopen in time for rehearsals for the Sept. 17 Gala Concert that starts the 2011-12 season.)
The first tour performance will be on Friday evening in Wiesbaden, Germany. Mutter, who performed with Honeck and the orchestra on tours to Carnegie Hall in New York City and to Europe in 2010, will play two pieces by contemporary German composer Wolfgang Rihm and Felix Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto.
After a short trip to Hamburg for a concert on Saturday, the musicians will fly to Vilnius, Lithuania, for a performance on Monday. Then, it's back across Europe for appearances on Sept. 1 and 2 at the Grafenegg Festival, near Vienna in Austria. The Grafenegg Festival's artistic director is pianist Rudolf Buchbinder, who will be soloist with the orchestra at Heinz Hall subscription concerts from Sept.

A native of Warsaw, Noskowski attended the Conservatory of his hometown where he learned the violin and composition. He obtained a scholarship to go to Berlin between 1864 and 1867, where he studied with Friedrich Kiel, one of the most famous teachers of composition of his time. He returned to Warsaw in 1880 and will remain there until the end of his days.
Noskowski composed but he is best known for his journalist, conductor and pedagogue especially. It is one of the leading figures of the Polish music at the turn of the century. It has as students many Polish composers of the next generation, including Karol Szymanowski, Ludomir Różycki and Grzegorz Fitelberg. He is considered the father of Polish symphonic music and directed the musical society of Warsaw between 1880 and 1902. It is also considered as the most important Polish composers during the last ten years of his life.
Although he is best known for his music for Orchestra, Noskowski also composed operas, music room, various sonatas and vocal music. About his chamber music, Wilhelm Altmann wrote that “it is truly effective and that it is merit the attention of the public and that it is worthy to be played.” His String Quartet dating from 1879 shows that the composer has likened the recent musical inventions from Central Europe. His music, regardless of its structure was little influenced by composers in vogue at the time, including Brahms, Liszt and Wagner.
