Investors using ETPs more for risk management
“We've seen pretty significant year-to-date increases on inverse” ETPs, said Russ Koesterich, managing director and global chief investment strategist for BlackRock Inc.'s iShares business. “In general, investors are using these products to position against what they think might be a dour movement of assets, and they want to hedge part of that exposure.”
When major market indexes plunged Aug. 4, portfolio managers at Roosevelt Investment Group Inc. used ultrashort exchange-traded funds to help shave about 100 basis points off losses on a day the Russell 3000 Index declined by 5.07%.
The short ETFs are used along with a broader array of risk management tools that include increasing cash, Treasuries and gold holdings, said Nainesh Shah, senior securities analyst and portfolio specialist at Roosevelt Investment Group.
“We want to have diversification within the risk management bucket” as well as the stocks portfolio, said Mr. Shah, whose equity boutique has about $5.2 billion in assets under management and advisement on behalf of pension funds, endowments and high-net-worth clients.
$2.1 BILLION IN JUNENet new inflows for leveraged, inverse and leveraged inverse ETPs totaled $2.1 billion in June alone, according to the latest figures available. In the first half of this year, investors put $6.1 billion in new assets into ETPs, almost as much as the $6.4 billion for all of 2010, according to BlackRock Inc's ETF industry report published last month.
“What we're seeing now is an evolution of the [ETP] industry,” said Scott Burns, director of ETF research at Morningstar Inc.
“A lot of people think ETFs are primarily used by retail investors,” he said. “That is increasingly not the case; they're tools for pension managers when building strategies, for tweaking risks inside of the investment portfolios.

On Monday August 15, Google announced the acquisition of Motorola Mobility. Google will pay $12.5 billion in cash for Motorola, or $40 per share, a 63% premium to the prior closing price. We believe Motorola is prized by Google for the following reasons:
Mobile Devices. Motorola manufactures smartphones and tablets that run on the Android operating system, which Google develops and maintains. By owning Motorola, Google can better integrate hardware and software development, similar to the strategy at Apple. The Networked Home. Motorola is a leading manufacturer of set-top boxes and network infrastructure for cable operators. This positions Google to enable in-home communication between mobile devices, televisions and computers. Notably, a networked home can access over-the-top video, for which Google can provide both search capability and content via YouTube. Patent Portfolio. Motorola has 17,000 issued patents and 7,500 patents pending, primarily in the area of wireless communication. Google can leverage this intellectual property to defend the Android ecosystem from competitors who are using the legal system to slow its growth. Financial Considerations. Motorola holds $10 per share in cash, and carries about $1 billion in net operating losses for tax purposes. These factors permit Google to pay a large acquisition premium and still expect non-GAAP earnings accretion immediately after the deal closes.At Roosevelt, we have invested to participate in the secular growth of smartphones primarily through our Mobile Wallet theme.
