It's back(pack)-to-school time again in Southington
SOUTHINGTON - For the past four years, Melissa Reid and Ashley Zerbe have been running the back-to-school book bag program through Community Services. The program provides backpacks filled with school supplies for students who have a need.
When Zerbe, 17, and Reid, 17, were eighth-graders, they took over the charity event from a graduating high school student. Now, with their own senior year approaching, they are passing on their duties to a group of eager 12-year-old girls who formed a club called the Giving Back Girls.
"They contacted community services," Zerbe said Monday morning at the Board of Education building. She was surrounded by the group of volunteers and the hundreds of backpacks being given away. Zerbe said she was worried about finding two people who could get along and work well on the project. She and Reid are great friends and never had any issues working together.
In July, the eighth-graders had a meeting to discuss doing the project and by August were stuffing the backpacks with crayons, pencils, folders and notebooks. All the supplies were donated.
"When we started it was a little tough, but when we got the hang of it, it was a lot of fun," said volunteer Emily Gibney, 12. The girls spent at least three days putting more than 350 bags together, Emily said.
For six hours on Monday, volunteers spent their time greeting parents and checking off names on clipboards. Volunteers brought three or four bags for students to choose from. Parents had to sign up at Community Services before the event. They had to meet certain criteria to get a bag, Zerbe said.
"This is my first year doing it," said Rachel Boroski. "I found out about it at the community center. I think it's a great program, especially with the way the economy is."
Boroski has two daughters, one entering second grade, the other entering fifth, both at Flanders School.
Erin Gibney, 12, Emily's sister, said when she sees children come in, she tries to gauge their personalities and what kind of backpack they would like.

The little flowers are Bridal Confetti colored with my Copic markers to match. I added a little bling to the centers of the flowers and a butterfly with bling to the side. The strip of ribbon at the bottom is from Offray. The sentiment was mounted using spellbinders rectangles. I also used a glitter pen on the swirls around the girl, but you can't see it on the picture.
