Getting My Sea Legs

Perhaps it was the movie Jaws , or that my mom is the type of swimmer that does the breaststroke without ever getting her hair wet. Maybe it’s that I never learned how to properly do the crawl myself when I swim. But I’ve never been entirely comfortable in the water.

So how was it that I found myself standing on top of a paddleboard?

They say opposites attract, so it figures that I’m married to a man who was a competitive swimmer at the international level. He taught windsurfing and sailing when he was younger, and thankfully it appears he’s passed along the water-loving gene to my kids: our son has quickly found his own sea legs, picking up surfing and a shaggy-blonde haircut to go with it, and my daughter loves to body surf.

I thought in the interest of understanding what they love about the surf, I would give it a try by taking a paddleboard lesson. There seemed to be something comforting about putting my literal and metaphoric toe in the calmer waters of a bay where the lessons are taught, rather than attempting to learn right away in ocean waves. I also liked the idea that I’d be holding onto a paddle, with the illusion of holding on to ‘something’ giving me added chutzpah.

I also decided recently to push the boundaries of my life a little more. I’m a firm advocate of a life philosophy I like to call “Living the Dash.” I’ve written about it in this column before , but it essentially views life at its most simplest by our birth date and date of death, separated only by a dash. What truly defines us is that dash, and that’s what needs to be lived to the fullest.

It also sounds better than a ‘bucket list.’

So with that rationale for stepping onto a board less than five inches thick and trying to balance on moving water, I set off for my lesson. My daughter offered her words of wisdom: “I hope you don’t fall mama, I’m scared you’re gonna fall.” Me too, babycakes, but thanks for the vote of confidence.
