INLAND: Website details climate change health effects

Communities in Inland Southern California and elsewhere should prepare for health problems caused by climate change, including an increase in infectious diseases such as West Nile virus, heat-related illnesses and asthma attacks brought on by smog and smoke from wildfires, scientists said Wednesday.

Climate change is one of the most serious public health threats facing the nation, yet few people are aware of how it can affect them, said Kim Knowlton, a senior scientist with the Natural Resources Defense Council, a New York-based environmental action group.

The effects were detailed during a telephone briefing to unveil the group's Web tool, which allows users to see extreme weather patterns and potential climate-related health problems by ZIP code. The maps are available at www.nrdc.org/climatemaps.

In Riverside and San Bernardino counties, climate impacts include temperatures increasing as much as 9 degrees Fahrenheit in some places by the end of the century. The area also will be more susceptible to drought, smog and dengue fever carried by two species of mosquitoes, according to the maps.

"If we stay on our present course, we can expect many of these trends and conditions to accelerate. We need to prepare, perhaps for the worst," Knowlton said. "We need to prepare our community systems and health systems to meet a changing climate future."

Preparations need to include responsible use of energy and water, reduced auto emissions, and improved urban planning that addresses the needs of the poorest segments of the population, which are disproportionately affected by climate change, said Sharon Harlan, an associate professor with the School of Human Evolution and Social Change at Arizona State University in Tempe.

Low-income communities and people of color suffer most from the health and economic effects of climate change. They often don't have air conditioning to ease rising temperatures or, if they do, may not be able to afford to run it, Harlan said. The poor also are more likely to live in polluted areas, leading to higher asthma rates, and have less tree canopy to protect them from heat.
